FAQ: POWDER COATING IN OHIO

Powder coating is a versatile way to finish a newly manufactured part or bring existing parts new life. We specialize in powder coating in Ohio and have a pre-treatment process that offers excellent results.

We strive to answer every inquiry we field about our powder coating capabilities, including these commonly asked questions.

How does powder coating compare to traditional painting?

The main difference between a conventional liquid paint and powder coating is the lack of required solvent that is needed to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid coating. Powder coating is heat cured to allow for it to flow and form a skin that totally encapsulates the metal.

Due to the lack of solvents and chemicals, powder coating is considered a more environmentally friendly process compared to traditional wet paint applications.

What type of materials can be powder coated?

Powder coating is mainly used for the coating of metals. Steel, aluminum and stainless steel work well in powder coating applications.

What kind of preparation is required for powder coated parts?

The pre-treatment process is often overlooked and is extremely influential in determining the quality level of the finished product.

Our 5-stage preparation system features a continuously monitored reverse osmosis water supply for complete removal of harmful minerals. Using high-pressure impingement washers, we remove any dirt and oils while applying conversion coatings and sealers before powder coating begins.

What colors and textures are available? Can you color match? Can you clear coat?

Our electrostatic spray guns can uniformly apply a range of coating formulations including epoxy, hybrids, polyesters, and urethane in over 150 stock colors. We have a variety of textures and glosses available and can clear coat and color match any needed customer specifications.

What parts are typically powder coated?

Powder coating’s possibilities are endless. Any metal that is conductive and can endure heat up to 400F or more can be powder coated to add better resistance to both oxidation and corrosion.

Typical uses include home appliances, automotive, power equipment, electronics, sporting goods equipment, furniture, gardening tools, and medical equipment.

Are there limitations on part size? The number of parts?

We can comfortably powder coat parts within these specifications: 60″ x 120″ x 72″

Alloy helps businesses with varying project sizes – from a couple dozen to a few hundred.

Does powder coating cover imperfections?

The powder coating process can cover minor and smaller material imperfections like scratches, but with any coating, the best result depends on the quality of the surface to which it is applied.

What determines the cost?

Many aspects contribute to the cost of the project. The two biggest drivers, however, are the level of complexity of a part and the number of oven cycles necessary for curing.

What is your turnaround time?

We can usually finish your powder coating project within one week. Depending on customer needs, faster turnaround times have been met in unique circumstances.
